In May 1935 the United Automobile Workers forms, and the American Federation of Labor appoints Francis Dillon as its first president.

In 1936, a second UAW convention is held in Indiana, where the UAW insists on the freedom to elect their own leaders. Homer Martin is elected the UAW’s new president.
